A brief insight into the Bowen Technique

Bowen therapy is an effective,
non-invasive treatment for a wide range of medical problems
What is Bowen?

The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure by making a series of precise, rolling-type moves over muscle, using the therapists thumbs or fingers. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used.

During the treatment the practitioner will leave the room for a few minutes at
a time to allow the clients body to respond to the gentle moves that have been performed. This rest period is an important part of the treatment and gives the body time to make the subtle adjustments which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain. It is these features which make the Bowen Technique unique.

What does Bowen treat?

The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person, not just the symptoms. The most common presentation for a Bowen therapist will be back pain. With Bowen the therapist will tend to give a whole-body treatment during the first visit, which includes the neck, knees and shoulders. Because it is often difficult to be completely sure where any given pain originates from and to know how other structures are being affected by the original problem, Bowen’s overall way of treating will most often get to the root of problems gently and efficiently. Practically any problem can potentially be addressed and many people even use the Bowen Technique as a means of stress management and health maintenance, seeing their therapist regularly 2-4 times a year.

Who can it help?

Bowen therapy is suitable for people of all ages including babies and children as well as adults and seniors. Bowen therapy can also help keep your body in good health and working at peak performance meaning you don’t have to be unwell to benefit from a Bowen Treatment. It’s a great way to help the body perform at an optimal level of health and efficiency through cellular hydration and detoxification, making Bowen popular with professional athletes, dancers, personal trainers and people such as builders or tradesmen whose body’s do a great amount of physical activity.

Where did it originate?

Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong, Australia developed his own “technique” and had a thriving practice until he died in the 1980’s. His approach is now known throughout the world.
